People often call something “a once in a lifetime opportunity” when they believe that an experience, event, or chance is so rare that it may never happen again, or at least not in their lifetime. Of course such claims are sometimes exaggerated and often used as a means to get people to part with their hard earned money. Maybe they’re trying to get you to buy a vacation package, or make an offer on a house, or invest in their startup. Whatever the opportunity may be, the point is they want to sell you on this idea that the opportunity may never come again.

But true once in a lifetime opportunities do exist. For example, those who attended Woodstock in 1969 got to participate in a cultural moment that many will never experience. The same could be said of those who witnessed the first flight by the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk in 1903. And of course, those who were fortunate enough to recognize the potential of Bitcoin way back in 2009 were part of something historic.

Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not here to promise the astronomical returns BTC has experienced since its inception. Nor can I guarantee that eCash will succeed in changing civilization as we know it. But I believe eCash has the potential to be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Because how often do you get to witness or participate in the creation of a new form of money that might one day become the global standard?

Imagine being present at the French Revolution, or the Constitutional Convention. And while those who are contributing to the eCash protocol today may not be founding a nation, they just might be contributing to the evolution of money in the digital age.

I know that may sound hyperbolic, but if one day eCash does become the global reserve currency, would it not be true? That’s obviously a big if, of course. We still have a long ways to go before eCash becomes cash for the internet, but I wholeheartedly believe it has a chance, and that chance could be not only the chance of a lifetime, but a chance to reinvent everything from how the banking system works, to the functioning of governments.

Money touches every aspect of our lives, from the food we eat, to the technology we use, to the way nations interact on the global stage. When a new form of money emerges, it doesn’t just change commerce. It changes society.

Whether you just want a front row seat and be a part of the eCash movement, or write lines of code and contribute to the ecosystem, or join the global network council and help shape the project’s future, I see this as a rare opportunity indeed.

Perhaps you’re thinking to yourself there are plenty of cryptocurrency projects that make these same claims. Maybe you choose to dismiss eCash as just another blockchain project in a sea of blockchains. But I believe that eCash is unique. It’s not just another token that was minted out of thin air, or the latest VC backed flavor of the month created to dump on retail. It’s got the pedigree of Bitcoin combined with technology that can scale to meet global demand.

This may not have revealed itself in the chart just yet, but compare the quality of the codebase, the roadmap, or the beautiful new landing page against any other project, and it will become obvious that eCash is different.

In just over 48 hours, we will get a glimpse of what the future of the eCash project has in store. My hope is the upcoming Electronic Cash Conference will lead to more people joining the project, not just as observers, but as contributors, helping to build a system that could redefine digital money.

Because if eCash really does fulfill its mission and becomes cash for the internet, then those who contributed, those who supported it and adopted it early, will not simply have participated in a financial project, they will have been part of history. And that is what makes this more than an opportunity, but a once in a lifetime opportunity.
