Everyone talks about how vital community is in the crypto world, but what does it really take to build a great one? Is it sheer numbers, how active the members are, or their level of conviction? There’s obviously no single formula, but I’ve come to believe that a truly awesome crypto community thrives on a combination of all of the above: size, engagement, belief, and trust, along with a clear purpose and welcoming spirit.

Matter of fact, numbers can signal momentum. A large community draws attention, amplifies a project’s voice, and pulls in newcomers. But size alone is meaningless if it’s just a mob of speculators waiting for a price spike.

Another key to a thriving crypto community is active participation, where members contribute ideas, help onboard newcomers, and work together toward common goals. For example, engagement in social media discussions can significantly influence a project’s trajectory.

Engagement is easily one of the most important metrics for a crypto community—think lively Telegram chats or conversations on X that are full of substance and passion instead of people merely shilling coins. What we want are conversations digging deep into concepts, tackling challenges, and propelling the mission onward.

This isn’t a slot machine. It’s a conviction machine. Crypto can be a rollercoaster, and only a community built on belief in its purpose can endure. A community built on conviction also needs direction, or it risks becoming blind fanaticism. That’s where shared vision and leadership step in.

Like timber from a maple tree, we want the eCash community to be strong and durable, and the only way to achieve that is through shared commitment. We can’t be a community that gives up without a fight or loses interest because the price is down.

Purpose and belief may be two of the most important ingredients to avoid failure. While memecoins are backed by nothing but hype and hot air, eCash is on a mission to increase economic freedom and individual sovereignty. We want people who are like-minded around these principles to become advocates and contributors, helping to promote the project and drive adoption.

If eCash wants to take on Visa or Venmo, we must build trust. Scams and rug pulls have made crypto investors wary, so transparency, accountability, and open communication within a community are essential. This is why the developers and project leaders actively engage with the community to provide regular monthly updates to foster credibility and long-term support.

Trust is crucial. Lately, crypto has been swamped with grifters who are only interested in promoting get rich quick schemes that leave their victims distrusting the entire space. That’s the last thing we need in this industry.

On a personal note, my wife has been subjecting me and our boys to attend church with her every Sunday for the past year. I’ve never been religious, so at first I saw it as a chore, but now I practically look forward to it. Not only because it brings my wife joy and offers my sons a positive influence, but also because I’ve come to realize it’s the kind of community I want to belong to.

We mostly keep to ourselves, and have made no friends there, but to me that’s the beauty of it. We aren’t pressured to commit to anything, though the invitation is always there, and everyone is free to dive in deep or stay on the edges depending on what they’re looking for.

I appreciate how everything runs so smoothly. They have a robust infrastructure to ensure every Sunday is like clockwork. The pastors all seem knowledgeable, genuine, and clearly believe in their mission. There’s a healthy mix of full-time staff and volunteers handling everything from worship to coffee duty, and the overall atmosphere is welcoming without being overbearing.

It’s what the eCash community could be, I thought. What a trip it was to connect my experience at church to my crypto journey. Rather than a chaotic clique of shillers and traders, what’s needed is a vibrant, principled collective. One that welcomes all—casual observers and die-hards alike—while staying rooted in our core mission of building censorship resistant cash for the internet. A community made up of a blend of dedicated contributors, paid by the project, and passionate volunteers who show up because they believe.

I look across the crypto space and see too many groups obsessed with pumps and raids. That’s not the future I want for eCash. I see its potential to become something truly great—a community that stands for something real, with no ceiling on how far it can spread. A community that doesn’t just survive the hype cycles but thrives beyond them.
